This marker for the
11th Independent Battery Indiana Light Artillery, is in recognition of their service during the
Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863. It marker the position of the 11th Indiana Battery at noon, on September 20, 1863. This is the only marker to the 11th Indiana Battery on the battlefield. The 11th Indiana Battery was organized at Fort Wayne, Indiana, and mustered into Federal service on December 17, 1861. A nearby marker says the battery had 4 Napoleons and 2 3” Rifled cannons at Chickamauga.

Third division (Sheridan).
Twentieth Corps. (McCook).
September 19, this battery came upon the field
near Lee and Gordon’s Mill on the Chickamauga Creek.
About 12 M. was ordered to the center and took position
south of Viniard’s; later was ordered back to
Lee and Gordon’s Mill to guard the Ford.
September 20th, at 38M took position near General
McCooks Headquarters. Remaining until near noon when
it was moved to this position, where it became desperately
engaged, the union line having been broken here. The
horses of one section being killed, the guns were lost.
Killed and died of wounds 5; Wounded 1 officer and 11 men; missing 2: total loss 19.

Short Significance Description:

The marker contributes to the national significance of the park under NR Criterion A because it represents the national movement among veterans to commemorate Civil War battlefields. This was the first U.S. national military park.

Short Physical Description
7'4" x 5' x 9', the rock-faced granite monument has a two-step, beveled base, a rectangular shaft and a castellated cap. At very top is row of five granite cannon balls. Bronze state seal in cap on one side; lettered tablet on opposite side shaft.
Long Physical Description
Monument located within the Chickamauga Battlefield along Glenn-Kelly Road near the foot of Lytle Hill, map site #230.
