This monument is dedicated to the
15th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment, is in recognition of their service during the
Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863. It marks their position at 2:00 p.m. on Sept. 19, 1863
during the battle.
Text (front):
15th Wisconsin Infantry
This regiment, under command of Lieut. Col. Ole C. Johnson,
became hotly engaged with the enemy at this point about 2:00 P.M. on the
19, Sept., 1863, maintaining this position for some time until forced to retire
to a new position in the open field to its left and rear, where it successfully
resisted every effort of the enemy to dislodge it. The regiment also assisted
in the recapture of a portion of a battery near this place. On the 20th, it position
was changed to the left about three fourths of a mile where it again suffered
severe and additional losses.

Short Significance Description:

Monument contributes to national significance of park under NR Criterion A because it represents the national movement among veterans & related groups to commemorate Civil War battlefields. This was the first U.S. national military park.

Short Physical Description
6' x 6' at base and 21' high, the polished dark grey granite monument consists of a column on a pedestal and two-step base. Pedestal and shaft are incribed with lettering and designs. Atop column is large carved 5-point star.
Long Physical Description
Monument located within the Chickamauga Battlefield along the LaFayette Road, map site #257.
