On the Pequannock Township Town Hall, a small plaque has been placed on the building which notes some of the history of the road that runs in front of the building. The plaque reads:
NEWARK-POMPTON TURNPIKE
In 1757 a public road was surveyed
in Pequannock Township. This
became part of the main road from
Kings Ferry on the Hudson River to
Morristown and the Delaware River.
On this road passed Washington,
Lafayette, Rochambeau, Von Steuben,
Wayne and other Colonial Officers
and Army Units.
In the 1920's as part of the State
highway system, it became Route 8, then
Route 23. When the present Route 23
was built, the Turnpike reverted to
the main street of the township.
