A stone monument with two guns stands on the
battlefield where the
Battle of New Market was fought. The bronze plaque reads:
THE BATTLE OF NEW MARKET
WAS FOUGHT HERE SUNDAY MORNING,
- MAY 15, 1864 -
THE CONFEDERATES UNDER GEN. J. BRECKINRIDGE
- WERE VICTORIOUS -
OVER THE FEDERALS UNDER GEN. FRANZ SIGEL
THE DECISIVE INCIDENT OF THE BATTLE
WAS THE HEROIC CAPTURE OF THE FEDERAL BATTERY
- BY THE V. M. I. CADETS -
When the Union troops were retreating under the charge of Gen. Breckinridge's Confederates and VMI cadets, their artillery got bogged down on the muddy wheat field and they were forced to abandon some of their cannons which the cadets captured.
Two guns are mounted on either side of the plaque. On the left is a Breechloader and on the right is a Muzzleloader.
