The sign reads: "Singer Hill Trail Originally used by Indians, mainly the Molallas, for going to the river for fishing and trading. Later used to get to the Singer Flour Mill on the bluff. Still later, widened and used for general access from the cliff to the bluff."
Part of the trail, near this sign, is the location of a long set of stairs that now cover the original Indian trail, which was used to travel up and down the steep bluff from the upper heights, about 50 feet down to the lower heights, which afforded access to the Willamette River. Later, settlers used the trail to access the businesses on both the upper and lower levels.
