Semper Fidelis Memorial Park overlooks the National Museum of the Marine CorpsClick for related waymark to open in new window at the Marine Corps Heritage Center in Triangle, Virginia, near Quantico MCB. The 23-acre park has a series of walkways with memorial bricks, commemorative benches, rally points, and monuments erected in honor of various Marine Corps units and organizations.

One of the monuments was erected by the 5th USMC Officers Basic Class of 1948. It stands along the memorial walkway that leads to the Semper Fidelis Memorial ChapelClick for related waymark to open in new window and pays a special tribute to the members who were killed in action in Korea and Vietnam.

The 5th Basic School was the only officer class in 1948 and most of the newly commissioned officers came from the enlisted ranks. Almost all of them were sent to Korea.

The brass plaque on the front reads:

A TRIBUTE TO THE FIFTH USMC OFFICERS BASIC CLASS 1948-1949

IN 1949, 228 MARINES GRADUATED FROM THE 5TH BASIC CLASS AS 2D LIEUTENANTS IN THE
UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS. THE ONLY MARINE OFFICER'S CLASS COMMISSIONED IN
1948, OVER 75 PERCENT WERE COMMISSIONED FROM ENLISTED RANKS. OVER 90 PERCENT
SUBSEQUENTLY SERVED IN THE KOREAN WAR AS PLATOON LEADERS IN THE PUSAN
PERIMETER, INCHON INVASION, AND CHOSIN RESERVOIR. 27 CLASS MEMBERS HAD PRE-
WORLD WAR II SERVICE, ANOTHER 139 HAD SERVED DURING WORLD WAR II. A LARGE
NUMBER SUBSEQUENTLY SERVED IN VIET NAM.

SPECIAL TRIBUTE IS GIVEN TO THE FOLLOWING WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE FOR THEIR
