This sign at Vasona Lake Parkin Los Gatos, California, explains why it is bad for the birds to be fed by human handouts.

Feeding the birds ignites a damaging cycle of events. An unnatural, and often unhealthy, food supply tempts wild birds to stay year-round rather than migrate to their natural breeding grounds. Overpopulation occurs quickly, leading to disease, environmental problems and risk to human health.

Abandoning domestic ducks or geese forces the native wild birds to compete for food and habitat. Interbreeding between wild and domestic species occurs and diseases spread quickly through the overcrowded population.

By resisting the temptation to feed the ducks and geese, or abandon domestic species, you help ensure that our native waterfowl populations stay healthy and wild.
