At first I thought the Victorian homes in pane one of this strip might be the Painted Ladies on Steiner Street in San Francisco, but those houses all have pointed triangular roof lines. This pane shows flat roof lines in front. Zippy's creator, Bill Griffith, offers only a small clue for this strip that these are Victorian homes on California Street.

California Street is a long East to West Street in San Francisco, California. I drove the length of California street looking for Victorian homes that match this scene. I found many beautiful Victorian home along California Street. Finally, between Pierce and Steiner Street on the south side of California Street, I found three adjacent homes that contain the features shown in the strip. Here are the features on which I matched this pane:
• at street level to the left of the first home is a fence with vertical planks,
• the building to the left with it's little window and small smoke stack,
• all three buildings have the stairway on the right side to the front door,
• all three buildings have the bay with arched windows on the left side,
• the rectangle designs below the bay windows,
• the small plantings in front of the two homes on the right, and
• the basic rooflines at the top.
These homes can be seen in Google Street View.

I found this strip in the Zippy Annual collection and the image in the book is bigger than the image on the Zippy website. I scanned the larger image from the book and placed it on my website for comparison. This Sunday Strip features three different sights in San Francisco, California. In this Sunday Strip, Zippy imagines what San Francisco would look like if it snowed.

In all panes there are snow drifts piled up on cars and roofs. In the first two panes, there is snow falling.
The first pane features Zippy walking by some victorian homes and cars on California Street.
The second pane features Zippy at an arched gate, which marks the entrance to Chinatown.
The third pane features Zippy walking along some cable car tracks along Mason Street, with the Transamerica Building in the background.

Date the strip ran: 03/01/1998
