Willowdale Dam, constructed ca 1830, was built to furnish water for the
Willowdale Mill, about 1/3 mile downstream. The mill is now merely a cellar hole, but the dam and the sluiseway to it remain. The waterfall has become a local scenic attraction.
Now the dam's only purpose is to stabilize the upstream water level. Just above the dam the water is only a few feet deep, but it supports a thriving
canoe rental business. Canoeing is possible for more than twenty miles upstream.
