Shanaz and Howard Defaii know their pizza. They know how to make it and serve it in a clean attractive atmosphere. Now the owners of Round Table Pizza on Redmond Road at Almaden Expressway have been named the chain's top restaurant in America for 2000 by the Round Table franchise corporation.

The Defaiis bought the restaurant in 1994. Since then they have bought all new appliances and tables and put in large windows to open up the restaurant. They have hired friendly, efficient staff to serve their customers. "We take good care of our staff," says Shanaz. "We treat them like our family."

Round Table Pizza, which was established in 1959, is a chain of approximately 600 franchised and company-affiliated restaurants located in California and eight other western states. The Redmond Avenue restaurant was evaluated by Round Table's Connect 4 program. It is an internal program that measures each restaurant's proficiency in the areas of cleanliness, product quality and guest service. Evaluations take place during a 12-month period. During that time each restaurant receives six visits and six phones calls by secret shoppers. The Defaiis' restaurant has consistently scored high during the past few tears of the program. Last year the restaurant also received the highest honor.

The Defaiis owned their first Round Table restaurant in Hayward for 20 years before selling it an opening the Redmond Round Table restaurant. All of their children went to Almaden schools and are quite successful. So successful in fact that their daughter Gilda Defaii, who is now an attorney, and her husband Nick Tehrani have decided to go into business with Gilda's parents and together they purchased the Round Table restaurant on Camden Avenue. "It's a great location. It's next to Bamboola and across the street from AVAC," said Shanaz. "But, it really needed a lot of work. We have all spent over $30,000 remodeling it." The grand opening celebration will be held in early july "Depending on when the contractors are finished," according to Shanaz.

Round Table is so happy with the Defaiis that they have asked them to take over the Via Valiente location of Round Table too. It needs a lot of work said Shanaz. "We aren't sure when we will re-open." Undoubtedly when it does re-open it will have the Defaii stamp of high quality food, clean attractive furnishings and friendly, attentive service that customers have grown to expect from a Defaii restaurant.
