This is one of many granite posts used to mark points on the boundary lines between towns in Massachusetts, in this case, the Town of Hamilton and the Town of Ipswich. The letter "H" (for Hamilton) is inscribed on one side, and the letter "I" (for Ipswich) is on the opposite side. Portions of the characteristic orange paint band around the top can be seen.
The nearest survey marker is
H-I10A (WM6CT1),about 0.1 mile south. This marker is at the end of a straight line series, and from here the boundary line follows the Ipswich River upstream (west).
