Pvt Burchett Douglass - Dancyville, TN - War of 1812 on Waymarking.com

Burchett Douglass was born October 6, 1793 in Sumner County, Tennessee. He was a veteran of the War of 1812 having enlisted as a private January 28, 1814 in Capt Allen Wilkinson’s Company and was discharged April 2, 1814.

Capt Wilkinson’s Company, which participated in the Battle of Horseshoe Bend (March 27, 1814), was part of the 3rd Regiment of Tennessee Militia under Colonel Stephen Copeland. There were approximately 660 men in this regiment. They were part of a brigade led by General Thomas Johnson (the other regiment of Johnson's brigade was led by Colonel R. C. Napier). Jackson's report of the Battle of Horseshoe Bend mentions that Copeland's regiment was held in reserve during this engagement. But a part of the regiment saw action, as muster rolls show casualties from this battle in the companies of Captains Moses Thompson and Allen Wilkinson.

In 1819 he married Martha McGee and they had seven children. He established the Bank of Fayette County and served as president until his death. He was elected to the Tennessee House and Senate and served as Speaker of the Tennessee House during the 22nd and 1st session of the 24th General Assembly. He also served as a Presidential elector on the Whig ticket in 1840.

Burchett Douglass died July 31, 1849. He is buried at the Dancyville United Methodist Church Cemetery in Dancyville, TN.

He was an active member of the convention which framed the present State constitution; Was twenty five years in public life without sustadning (sic) a defeat.
His public worth lives in the Archives of the State.
His private virtues, in the memory of his Children.
