A plaque at the community garden central kiosk reads:
Fort Mason
COMMUNITY GARDEN
THE FORT MASON COMMUNITY GARDEN IS A SELF-SUPPORTING,
NON-PROFIT PARK PARTNER OPEN TO ALL WHO ENJOY THE
BEAUTY AND SERENITY OF GARDENING IN THIS SMALL OASIS
NESTLED AMIDST AN URBAN ENVIRONMENT.
THIS COMMUNITY GARDEN WAS ORIGINALLY FOUNDED IN 1975
BY GALILEO HIGH SCHOOL AND THE SAN FRANCISCO ARTS
COMMISSION AFTER RECEIVING A FEDERAL GRANT TO
ESTABLISH COMMUNITY GARDEN PROGRAMS.
THE GARDEN WAS ORIGINALLY LOCATED IN THE GREAT MEADOW
WEST OF HERE AND WAS RELOCATED IN 1979 WHEN RESEARCH
AT THE GOLDEN GATE NATIONAL RECREATION AREA REVEALED
THAT THE ORIGINAL FORT MASON POST GARDEN WAS
ESTABLISHED ON THIS SITE IN 1890.
The garden is very fruitful and plentiful. There is currently a four year waiting list to get a plot in the community garden!
The garden is also home to geocache "Green Thumb", the oldest continuous cache in San Francisco County!
