In 1818, a 30 foot by 50 foot log chapel was built at this location. In 1832, a larger cathedral was built but that one burned in 1860. A third was built in 1862. Eventually a much larger one was needed by the growing population and in 1905, construction was started the fourth one (it was completed in 1908). It was ravaged by fire on July 22, 1968.
Within these ruins, and retaining the façade and the walls, a new fifth cathedral was built in 1972.
