The fire was caused by an arson attack during the night in 1979. The blaze was fought into the early hours of Sunday 4 March. Over 90% of the school was destroyed and 30 classrooms lost. The school was reopened the next week in temporary classrooms and all school records were saved. Furniture and books were ruined.
As a result of the fire much of the site has been rebuilt to a high standard with modern facilities throughout.
