Long Description:This is one of Houston’s oldest parks, donated to the city in 1923.
Over the years, the park wasn't very well cared for and eventually
became the apex of Houston’s vagrant community. Then
Toyota
Center was built and the city sprang into action. The charities
that once set-up in Root Square, handing out free meals, were
relocated outside of downtown. With monies donated by the Rockets,
the entire park was ripped apart and re-landscaped. Flowers and
trees were planted; sculptures were installed; and the park’s
coolest feature - a sunken basketball court in the shadow of the
home of the Rockets - was built.
