The Houston Rockets began, oddly enough, as the San Diego Rockets, an NBA expansion team. Perhaps needing to be where their name made a little more sense, the team moved to Houston (home to Johnson Space Center and Rocket Park) in 1971. The Rockets, with team members like Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler, won two back-to-back NBA championships in the 1993-94 and 1994-95 seasons, becoming Houston's
only championship team. After their two championships, the team begged for a stadium. They got this one, on the eastern edge of downtown, in 2003.
The Houston Comets were one of the original WNBA teams, winning the league’s first championship in 1997, followed by three more 1998-2000. The Houston Aeros were an IHL expansion team in 1994, moving on to the newly-formed AHL in 2001.
