In 1962, French artist Jean Debuffet began experimenting with an artistic style consisting of doodles done with ballpoint pen and using only the colors of black, white, red and blue. Debuffet gradually expanded this style to his artworks of not only drawing, but also paintings and sculpture. All of his works done in this manner, which he experimented with until 1974, became known as the ‘L’Hourloupe Cycle.’
Monmument au Fantome was one of the sculptural works of the L’Hourloupe cycle. Another one, Monument with Standing Beast, can be found in Chicago. These works consisted of painted fiberglass over a steel armature. The work in Houston was originally installed in the plaza of a skyscraper, the 1100 Louisiana Building, but was moved to Discovery Green Park at the eastern edge of downtown in 2008. In its new location, the sculpture is center-stage, with the skyline of Houston providing the backdrop.
According to the park’s website, the seven individual pieces of this group are said to represent a hedge, a dog, a chimney, a phantom, a tree, a mast and a church.
