These lions were commissioned by E.G. Lewis the founder of University City in 1909. The sculptor was George Julian Zolnay and the original lions were constructed of concrete and each weighed 8 tons. The lions originally stood atop 40-foot pylons of limestone designed by Thomas Young of Eames and Young Architects. Over the years the pylons became unstable and began to lean. In 1991 the pylons were reduced by 14 feet and the concrete lions were replaced with lighter fiberglass ones. The original lions are in the collection of the Missouri Historical Society.
