Lawyer, Soldier, Senator


Lived here in 1838 [Jacksonville, AL.].
1862-63 Colonel of 51st Alabama Cavalry. Raised by him in this county [Calhoun Co., AL]. 1863-65 Brigadier General C.S.A. with Wheeler’s Cavalry. 1876-1907 United States Senator. Distinguished Statesman of Alabama.

Joseph Wheeler (September 10, 1836–January 25, 1906), Nicknamed "Fighting Joe", opposing William T. Sherman's advance on Atlanta. In late 1864 his Cavalry Command was virtually the only effective Confederate force to oppose Sherman's March to the Sea.
