The Market Cross is one of the oldest buildings in Shap. Hence why OS chiselled a Cut Bench Mark on it.
There is a plaque which says 'Built through grant of charter 1687', put there by Shap Parish Council to commemorate the tercentenary in 1987.

The Market Cross building was bought by Shap Local History Group soon after the library left here to go to present site. The parish council still meet here.

Cut Bench mark is on left leg of the two middle legs of filled in arch on front of building.

Shap is just north of Junction 39 of M6, on the A6.
