[EN] The port of Luçon is at the origin of the city.
Established on one of the streams descended from the limestone plain towards the Gulf of Pedestrians. Each stream has generated a village with its port.
In the 7th century, St Philbert, from Noirmoutier, founded a Benedictine monastery on the stream of Luçon.
In the 13th century, to avoid the overflowing of the Vendée River in Fontenay-le-Comte, King Philip the Bold (1270-1285) prescribed the digging of a canal (the Achenal the King) to divert the floods of the Vendée on the stream of Luçon, thus devoting the primacy of this one. Luçon now has a dual function channel:
Hydrographic: it is part of the swamp drainage network.
commercial: the port was established at the bottom of the canal, in contact with the city.
