Impressive bronze statue located in Simon Bolivar Park in Old Havana.

Simon Bolivar was born in Caracas in what is now Venezuela in 1783. The son of a prosperous family, he was sent to school in Spain and France. It was there that he was introduced to the ideals of the Enlightenment, which eventually resulted in the overthrow of the Spanish colonial government in 1818. This resulted in the proclamation of the new country of New Granada.

In 1821, following the defeat of a large Spanish expeditionary force at the Battle of Carabobo, the Spanish withdrew and independence for Venezuela was achieved.

Bolivar was the first President of the united countries of Venezuela, Colombia, Panama Ecuador and parts of northern Peru, Northern Brazil and Western Guyana, referred to as Gran Colombia.

He was President of the Second Republic and Third Republic of Venezuela. During his tenure he was instrumental in leading the independence of present day nations Bolivia and Peru.

At its height Gran Colombia was considered one of the most powerful nations in the world. Other Spanish colonies, including Puerto Rico, Cuba and the Dominican Republic soon adopted his unionist ideas of independence.

Bolivar died in 1830 in Santa Marta, Gran Colombia, which is now in Colombia.

He is referred to throughout the region as El Liberatador.
