Title: Ars et Scientia
Date: 2015
Medium: Spraypaint
The public artwork, which pays homage to the combination of Art and Science, is painted across the wall's upper two-thirds on south side of Northeastern University's Meserve Hall at 35-37 Leon Street, Boston, Massachusetts.
A realistic image of a woman from the shoulders up is rendered in grayscale. A light-colored tunic drapes over the figure's left shoulder and across her body. With face tilted upwards towards the heavens, a pair of long braids hang straight down along her neck. Her right hand's thumb and forefinger gently hold a bolt of lightening. The left middle finger, forefinger and thumb lightly grasp an artist's paint brush vertically. Each hand is framed by a circle, one blue, one red. Stars are scattered in the background along the top border.
A descriptive metal plaque is mounted to the wall beneath the piece and reads:

Inspired by both classical painters and Chicano artists, El Mac fuses the disciplines of art and science in this image as a nod to his engineer father, a graduate of Northeastern, and his artist mother.
This work is part of President Joseph E. Aeoun’s Public Art Initiative, a campuswide effort to showcase dynamic and diverse artworks.
