Saint Patrick was a fifth-century Romano-British Christian missionary and bishop in Ireland. Known as the "Apostle of Ireland", he is the primary patron saint of Ireland, along with saints Brigit of Kildare and Columba. He is venerated in the Roman Catholic Church, the Lutheran Churches, Anglican Communion, the Old Catholic Church and in the Eastern Orthodox Church as equal-to-the-apostles and Enlightener of Ireland.
The dates of Patrick's life cannot be fixed with certainty, but there is broad agreement that he was active as a missionary in Ireland during the second half of the 5th century. Early medieval tradition credits him with being the first bishop of Armagh and Primate of Ireland, and they regard him as the founder of Christianity in Ireland, converting a society practising a form of Celtic polytheism. He has been generally so regarded ever since, despite evidence of some earlier Christian presence in Ireland.

Patrick d'Irlande, saint Patrice en français ou saint Patrick en anglais est un saint semi-légendaire qui a été le sujet d'une grande production hagiographique interrogée par la critique moderne qui cherche à établir le degré d’historicité de ce personnage. Sur un mince canevas historique, la légende a en effet brodé ses fioritures parmi lesquelles les travaux des chercheurs modernes ont progressivement discerné le souvenir de traditions païennes de l'Irlande, des emprunts à la Bible et des topoi hagiographiques.
Les dates et lieux traditionnellement retenus, relatifs à sa biographie, sont une naissance vers 386 en Bretagne insulaire, une mission en Irlande en 432 et une mort le 17 mars 461 à Down, Ultonie. Cette tradition en fait un saint chrétien fêté le 17 mars2. Des traditions concurrentes lui donnent une date de naissance comprise entre 373 à 390, une date de mort vers 460 ou entre 489 et 496, les dates tardives résultant probablement d'une confusion avec Palladius3.
Saint patron de l'Irlande, il est considéré comme son évangélisateur et comme le fondateur du christianisme irlandais. La légende de ce missionnaire thaumaturge n'est ainsi pas purement hagiographique et mythique, mais elle a aussi un caractère patriotique et nationaliste.
