Alternative waters for native amphibians

Between 1998 and 2005, six new small waters were created for native amphibians in the Eißendorf forest in the south-west of Hamburg.
The south of Hamburg, with its mostly sandy subsoil, is naturally poor in water. For this reason numerous amphibians (about 20 - 80 grass frogs, 1000 - 2000 toads and 150 - 300 newts) left the Eißendorf forest every year and migrated to spawn via the "Vahrendorf Stadtweg" to the two ponds south of the forest. Crossing the road was fatal for many animals.
The considerable losses during the migration were the trigger for the idea to build alternative waters. On the north side of the road spawning biotopes were to be created, which the amphibians could safely visit.
In the meantime, six new ponds have been created. First investigations have shown that the new habitats are accepted.
As the ponds are of different depths and also vary in vegetation and light, they offer a new habitat for a broad spectrum of species. Positive developments can also be expected for dragonflies and numerous aquatic organisms.
