Albufeira Power Station / Pintor Samora Barros Art Gallery IPA00015570

Industrial architecture, new art, eclectic, proto-modernist. Power station of irregular rectangular plant conjugating elements Arte Nova exteriors with a proto-modernist and eclectic language in the interior. The general organization of the main façade also bears witness to these currents, along with a traditional way of building in the Algarve with pinnacles over developed cornice and gables to the center. Panel of tiles New Art in the gable of the main facade; blind arches at the N. end of the second floor and inverted keel ceiling characteristic of a modernist architectural language.

My words:- This Art Gallery takes its name from one of Albufeira’s most famous citizens, artist José Ricardo Júdice de Samora Barros, who was born in here in 1887. It's in the Jardim Público de Albufeira, the historic center of town and can be found in the old Electrical Power Station which dates from 1926 on the south side of the square. In 1988 the building was revamped and transformed into an Art Gallery. It has two floors and large arched exterior spans to the north enabling natural lighting throughout the building, the tiles and external motives on the façade are by Samora Barros whose bust is displayed on a plinth at the western end of the building. The gallery displays masterpieces by a variety of artists and showcases many different painting techniques.

José Ricardo Júdice Samora Barros was born on 3rd April, 1887 and attended the painting course at the School of Fine Arts in Lisbon, where he received several honorary awards. He had some liberal ideas and is not only connected to the history of the city for his artistic side, but for having dedicated body and soul to the valorization and defence of his homeland, participating actively in the social and political life of the city. He died in 1972.
