This sign is on a former railway line that now forms a 'rails to trails' route and in turn is part of a much longer route.

There is also information about how locals use the route for leisure and fitness.
GET FIT, HAVE FUN, GO GREEN!

The Greenway, once an important rail link between the Midlands and Wales, is now bustling instead, with walkers, cyclists, runners and horseriders.

The route forms part of the Way for the Millennium, a 40 mile long east-west route across some of Staffordshire's most attractive countryside, using towpaths, old railway lines and footpaths.

It is also part of the Sustrans National Cycle Network (NCN), a network of 13,400 miles of walking and cycling routes spanning the UK.

Being part of the NCN has enabled funding to be found, to upgrade and extend this route. There is now a well surfaced track from Stafford, extending beyond Gnosall and ultimately all the way to Newport.

To link up with this, a disused stretch of railway line connecting Staffordshire and Shropshire is being turned into a cycle way and footpath too, creating an attractive, safe, traffic free route stretching from Stafford to Telford.

The Greenway is also a fantastic 'green corridor', host to lots of wildlife, with foxes, badgers and numerous kinds of small mammals, insects, birds and bats. Look out for the white rabbits that have lived around the area for many years, in spite of the thriving local buzzard population!

Derrington offers lots of opportunities to walk, whether you want to join a group or walk alone, or take a stroll with family and friends. The Village Trail is just part of many local routes and footpaths you can explore. We hope you enjoy your walk!
`I used to cycle to work along the Greenway but now I cycle for pleasure and the benches provide a welcome breather - there is nothing nicer than just sitting and watching the world go by'.

Village resident, Peter Birks.
Walking For Health

Welcome to walking - the 'natural health service'!

Walking is an easy and cheap form of exercise, accessible to most people - and you can do it anytime or anywhere!

Regular walking can help reduce the risk of heart problems and stroke, improve muscle strength and bone density, and help reduce the risk of falls. It can also help with weight loss.

Walking can take you away from the stresses of every day life and bring you closer to nature, helping combat anxiety and depression and improving mental wellbeing.
