The harbour has had challenges with sand bars in the past. As recently as 2016 the mouth of the harbour was getting filled in to the point that a vessel was moored. Fishers were successful in getting the Department of Fisheries and Oceans to help with a long-term solution to keep sandbars from forming in their harbour.
The entire harbour is not just for commercial fishers, 200 feet of floating dock is reserved for visitors. The port and marina are operated by the West Point Harbour Authority.
