 "The LAAC was founded thanks to the work undertaken in the early 1970s by Gilbert Samuel, an engineer ignorant of the world of contemporary art, but who would have known, according to legend, a real love at first sight while leafing through a magazine art.
Gilbert Delaine created, in 1974, an association named Contemporary Art, with the aim of gathering a collection for the city. He succeeds, partly thanks to the Malraux law, to interest in his project industrialists, personalities and artists like Ladislas Kijno, Victor Vasarely, Alfred Manessier, Jean Le Moal, Arthur Van Hecke, Joan Mitchell, Arman, Caesar or Karel Call.
Neither esthete nor speculator, but true art lover, Delaine buys according to her favorites. To the artists, he asks them to offer a work for each piece bought by the association and, in 1982, nine hundred works are collected. It was also that year that the building of the contemporary art museum designed by the architect Jean Willerval was built, as well as the sculpture garden designed by landscape architect Gilbert Samel.
Many problems arise in the form of local political conflicts, insurance problems and water damage. The museum closes in 1997, but its renaissance is prepared; the buildings are renovated. The collection is enriched with the aim of covering all contemporary creation from 1945 to today, the FRAC Nord-Pas-de-Calais, the Pompidou Center and the Museum of Modern Art of Lille lend works, and the LAAC reopens in November 2005. "

 " Le LAAC a été fondé grâce au travail entrepris, au début des années 1970, par Gilbert Samuel, un ingénieur ignorant du monde de l'art contemporain, mais qui aurait connu, selon la légende, un véritable coup de foudre en feuilletant un magazine d'art.
Gilbert Delaine crée, en 1974, une association nommée L'Art contemporain, dans le but de réunir une collection pour la ville. Il réussit, en partie grâce à la loi Malraux, à intéresser à son projet des industriels, des personnalités et des artistes comme Ladislas Kijno, Victor Vasarely, Alfred Manessier, Jean Le Moal, Arthur Van Hecke, Joan Mitchell, Arman, César ou Karel Appel.
Ni esthète, ni spéculateur, mais véritable amateur d'art, Delaine achète selon ses coups de cœur. Aux artistes, il leur demande d'offrir une œuvre pour chaque pièce achetée par l'association et, en 1982, neuf cents œuvres sont ainsi rassemblées. C'est aussi cette année-là qu'est construit le bâtiment du musée d'art contemporain conçu par l'architecte Jean Willerval ainsi que le jardin de sculptures pensé par le paysagiste Gilbert Samel.
De nombreux problèmes surgissent sous forme de conflits politiques locaux, de problèmes d'assurances et de dégâts des eaux. Le musée ferme ses portes en 1997, mais sa renaissance est préparée ; les bâtiments sont rénovés. La collection est enrichie avec comme objectif de couvrir toute la création contemporaine de 1945 à nos jours, le FRAC Nord-Pas-de-Calais, le Centre Pompidou et le musée d'Art moderne de Lille prêtent des œuvres, et le LAAC rouvre en novembre 2005. "
