The 1920 census lists Cornelia Marschall as a high school teacher in Llano County, Texas, where she was born the daughter of Ernst Marschall and Lucy Meusebach. Her grandfather John Meusebach, was the Commissioner General of the Adelverein, or the Society for the Protection of German Immigrants and was the founder of Fredericksburg, Texas.

Her doctoral dissertation, "Development of Donaeea muscipula: Flower and Seed" appeared in the Botanical Gazette in 1929.

Dr. Smith was elected to the Texas Women's Hall of Fame in 1989.

She was married to Charles George Smith (1891-1967), a Professor of English at Baylor University.
