This is a 'linear' hike so having a car change is not just advantageous, but necessary. There are several of these signs along the Coastal Walk, and they read:
Pack your backpack for an adventure to remember. Vast heathland plains, long sandy beaches, crystal clear creeks and lagoons, rocky headlands, abundant wildflowers and soaring birdlife are just a few of the coastal treasures awaiting you.
From Angourie to Red Rock, taking in the longest stretch of protected coastline in NSW, the Yuraygir Coastal Walk links 65 kilometres of tracks, trails, beaches and rock platforms. The walk passes through the villages of Brooms Head, Minnie Water and Wooli. These tranquil communities allow you to restock on supplies and recuperate. You could even stay in village overnight accommodation if you have decided not to camp in one of the seven national park campgrounds along the route. Choose to complete the entire route in a four day trip, or opt for a variety of shorter outings.
Guiding you on your walk are the footprints of the endangered coastal emu (Dromaius novaehollandiiae).
Once abundant, the local emu population has been steadily declining over the years. Listed as an Endangered Population their biggest threats to survival are habitat loss, fires during the spring breeding season, predation by foxes and wild dogs, and collisions with vehicles.
For your safety
Vehicles are permitted on some beaches. Be alert and listen for their approach.
Water is not available at all campsites. Ensure you carry sufficient between water points.
Medical assistance is not close. Carry a good first aid kit and know how to apply first aid.
Mobile phone coverage is limited. Dial 000 or 112 in an emergency.
Preferably carry a Emergencey Position Indication Radio Beacon (EPIRB).
Before you start your walk
Organise watercraft for safe river crossings at Sandon, Wooli and Red Rock.
Check www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au or www.clarencetourism.com for further information on river crossings and accommodation.
Obtain a tide chart to ensure rock platforms are traversed at low tide.
Give your itinerary to a close friend or relative.
