The Imperial Bank of Canada was incorporated in 1873. The Ottawa branch opened for business in this building in 1937. In 1961 the Imperial Bank of Canada merged with the Canadian Bank of Commerce to become the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC). The building operated as a CIBC branch until 1982. The Civil Service Co-operative Credit Society (known as Alterna in 2018) used the building from 1986 until 1992.

The building was then vacant for decades until becoming home to Ian Kimmerly Stamps. A well written history of this bank building is available on the Ian Kimmerly Stamps web site.
