A 6' high bronze figure of a uniformed Union standard bearer is holding a 4' by 6' flag by a pole held in his raised right hand. The flag pole is supported by a holder that the soldier wears over his left shoulder and across his chest. A pack is on his back and sheathed sword hangs from the soldier's left hip. The soldier is walking with his left leg forward.

The soldier stands in a bronze plinth on top of a 12' granite base. The base has two parts. A 4' square by 10' high granite shaft tapers as it rises. The shaft is surrounded by a 2' high 10' square granite base. The base has three small steps and flanked with cannons on each side. Plaques with the names of fallen soldiers are located on each upper surface of the lower base.

The Standard Bearer Monument honors the war dead of the 124th Regiment of the New York State Volunteers. It was created by Theo Ruggles Kitson and dedicated on September 5, 1907. The four bronze plaques on the lower base contain the names of 249 men who died during the Civil War. The monument was renovated in 2007 by Orange County, to celebrate its centennial, at a cost of $80,000.

The front of the shaft has a bronze plaque which hs the dedication. It is inscribed:
