A bronze deer sculpture on a plinth of granite in the centre of the Memorial Wood, Bradgate Park.
Opened in October 2017, Memorial Wood is an area of woodland to the side of the accessible carriage way that crosses the Park. It offers a tranquil setting overlooking Cropston Reservoir and is reached by a natural stone path.
"Sat to the side of the accessible carriageway that crosses the park, the memorial wood is bound by traditional metal deer fencing, has seating and a central cast iron deer sculpture set on a stone plinth.
It is also home to more than 50 memorial plaques - with orders having come from America, Queensland and across the UK.
The 16cm bronze memorial leaves have been prepared by Castle Fine Art Foundry, inspired by the oaks of Bradgate Park, and are being added to pillars made from oak from the woodland management work undertaken by the Bradgate Park Trust.
The wood is one of a number of projects in Leicestershire and Rutland that has been supported to mark the 300th anniversary of the formation of the United Grand Lodge of England in 1717.
Bradgate Park is close to the heart of local Freemasons, as Charles Bennion, the park’s original benefactor, was an eminent Leicestershire Freemason.
The Provincial Grand Master of Leicestershire and Rutland David Hagger said: “With the connection of Charles Bennion, with both Bradgate Park and Freemasonry, the memorial wood was a perfect project to fund.""
