I never knew that the Sisters of Mercy got their start here in Pittsburgh until I stumbled across this Pennsylvania Historic Marker.

I was wandering around downtown Pittsburgh, taking photos for a waymark that's a walking tour of the Penn-Liberty Historic District. But instead of just a waymark in the National Register of Historic Places, I also scored a Pennsylvania Historic Marker and a "FIRST of its kind." I don't know how many times I've walked down this street, two blocks from my office, and I've never seen the sign. It takes an activity like waymarking to make you stop and be aware of your surroundings.

"Frances Ward and six companions from Carlow, Ireland, opened the first Mercy convent in the U.S. here. Founding date was December 21, 1843, and at once the sisters began to serve the city's poor, sick, and uneducated. From here, Mercy convents spread across the U.S."
