Above the placards is a huge mural which spans the entire width of the wall. If you love hockey, you will enjoy this mural. It depicts the 1939 Smoke Eaters hockey team in action, their first World Championship, as well as minor hockey in Trail.
As the placard relates, the Smokies won the world hockey championship not once, but twice, first in 1939 and again in 1961. An excerpt from the placard:
In years to come, the Trail Smoke Eaters would capture the Savage cup 18 more times, the most of any team in BC.
They also won 2 Allen Cups, emblematic of Canada's hockey championship, and 2 World championships, the only town in Canada to achieve this feat.
This, one of the four placards, relates a bit of the story of the Smoke Eaters, still one of the town's pride and joys.
The Smoke Eaters are still active, though now as a Junior B team, Memorial Centre still being their home arena.
