[EN] "One of the five main churches in downtown Lübeck is the Jakobikirche. It was consecrated as a church of seafarers and fishermen, who still have their meeting house in the boat company on the opposite side. Patron is Saint James the Elder. Since the 1950s, the lifeboat no. 2 of the "Pamir", a large sailboat that sank in 1957, has been located in the northern tower chapel as a memorial. This raised St. Jakobi to the rank of a national memorial of civilian shipping.
Already in 1227, together with the sister churches St. Aegidien and St. Petri, the church of St. James with its cemetery is mentioned in the upper town book. Originally it was planned to build a church with a high nave and a tower based on the model of the Marienkirche. Then this project was changed in favour of a new plan, but it was also not implemented. Whether this was due to the economic crisis at the end of the 13th century has not been proven.
It was not until the high altar was completed on 12 June 1334 that the church was consecrated, but there were already plenty of side altars where church services were held. Since there were no pews here in the Middle Ages, preachers and visitors walked through the large hall, which was the former Jacob's church. In the course of the 14th century the outer walls were opened for chapel annexes, thus creating the two-storey sacristy south of the choir.
On Palm Sunday night in 1942, the Church of St. James had the good fortune to remain intact, with a rich interior that has evolved over the centuries".
