[EN] "Named after the popular US President, the bascule bridge is part of the Columbusstraße, which runs between the city centre and the "Havenwelten Bremerhaven".

The Kennedybrücke is an electrically moved folding road bridge and was built from 1960 to 1961. It was named in January 1964 after the US President John F. Kennedy, who was murdered in November 1963 and was also extremely popular in Germany.
Below the bridge there is a flood barrier to protect against floods or even storm surges. The barrage was completed just in time. Only one year after completion, the severe storm tide came in February 1962, when the flood barrier was put to the test for the first time, preventing the majority of the inner stand from being flooded.
For the shipyards, which at that time were situated upstream, the construction as a bascule bridge was mandatory, today a bridge opening has only rare value."
