[DE] "Immer weniger Gottesdienstbesucher: Andernacher Kirche St. Albert muss schließen
Seit Ende der 50er-Jahre werden in der Andernacher Kirche St. Albert Messen gefeiert – doch jetzt ist klar: Das Gotteshaus hat keine langfristige Zukunft. Schon länger stand die Schließung der Kirche im Raum, nun ist sie beschlossene Sache.
Warum soll St. Albert geschlossen werden?
„Eine solche Situation sucht sich niemand aus“, sagt Pfarrer Stefan Dumont im Gespräch mit unserer Zeitung. „Aber es ist schon länger klar, dass St. Albert die erste Kirche in Andernach ist, die wir schließen werden. Vier Gottesdiensträume lohnen sich nicht mehr.“ Denn: Schon lange werden die Gottesdienstbesucher – gerade in St. Albert – weniger, jetzt hat die Kirche der Heizung einen Totalschaden. Dazu ist die benachbarte Michaelskapelle dringend sanierungsbedürftig. Allein die bald beginnende Sanierung der Fassade kostet rund 220.000 Euro. Eine 60-prozentige Kostenübernahme hat das Bistum Trier nur zugesagt, wenn die Kapelle künftig das Gotteshaus der Pfarrei wird – und St. Albert dafür geschlossen wird.
Welche Folgen hat die Schließung für die Pfarrei?
Weihnachts- und Ostergottesdienste oder gar Taufen und Erstkommunionen wird es in der Pfarrei St. Albert wohl künftig nicht mehr geben. Dazu ist die Michaelskapelle, in der nach der Schließung der Kirche dann Gottesdienste gefeiert werden sollen, schlichtweg zu klein. Eine konkrete Idee, was indes mit dem Kirchengebäude aus der Nachkriegszeit geschehen soll, hat Dumont noch nicht. „Ein Abriss wäre aber die letzte aller Optionen“, betont er. Er sieht einen Verkauf der Kirche eher infrage kommen – dann könnte das Gotteshaus zum Beispiel zu einem Kultur- oder Konzertgebäude werden. Die Stadt ist laut Dumont allerdings nicht an einem Kauf interessiert. Die angrenzende Kita St. Albert sowie das Thomas-Becket-Haus bleiben übrigens in jedem Fall unangetastet.
Welche Zukunft hat die Pfarrei dann noch?
„Wir lösen die Pfarrei nicht auf, wir verlagern nur ihren Schwerpunkt“, erklärt Dumont. „Mit der Michaelskapelle haben wir eine schöne Alternative, die wir noch dazu einfacher bewirtschaften können.“ Gleichzeitig aber auch eine Alternative, die den Gläubigen nicht von Beginn an geschmeckt hat. „Es war anfangs schon schmerzlich, dass St. Albert aufgegeben wird“, sagt Claudia Helbing, Vorsitzende des Pfarrgemeinderates in Andernach. „Aber man muss sich klarmachen, dass man sich nur vom Gebäude trennt und nicht von der Pfarrei als solche.“ Auch wenn es sie schmerzt, dass größere Feierlichkeiten in St. Albert künftig ausbleiben – sie kann der kleineren Michaelskapelle auch Positives abgewinnen. „Beim Gottesdienst waren wir teilweise nur noch 40 Leuten in der großen Kirche – da ist in der Kapelle dann bestimmt eine schönere Atmosphäre.“
Wann kommt die Schließung?
Noch möchte Dumont keinen konkreten Zeitpunkt nennen – nur so viel: So lange die Michaelskapelle noch renoviert wird – 2018 ist dort noch die Innensanierung geplant, bleibt St. Albert vorerst unberührt. „Wir haben keinen Druck, nichts muss zu einem bestimmten Zeitpunkt über die Bühne gehen“, erklärt der Pfarrer.
Was bedeutet die Schließung von St. Albert für die anderen Kirchen in Andernach?
Sowieso plant das Bistum mit seinem Konzept der „Pfarreien der Zukunft“ ab 2020 eine deutliche Zusammenfassung von Verwaltungen und Kirchen. Laut Dumont also gut möglich, dass St. Albert nicht die letzte Kirche bleibt, die in Andernach schließen muss. „Ich glaube, dass wir in Andernach bis zum Jahr 2030 nur noch eine Kirche haben werden“, gibt er zu bedenken."

For this purpose, the neighbouring Michaelskapelle is urgently in need of rehabilitation. The renovation of the façade, which will soon begin, costs around 220,000 euros. The diocese of Trier has promised to cover 60 percent of the costs only if the chapel becomes the church of the parish in the future - and St. Albert will be closed for this purpose.
What consequences does the closure have for the parish?
Christmas and Easter services or even baptisms and first communions will probably no longer exist in the parish of St. Albert. The Michaelskapelle, in which church services are to be celebrated after the closing of the church, is simply too small for that. Dumont has not yet come up with a concrete idea of what will happen to the post-war church building. But a demolition would be the last of all options,"he emphasizes. He sees a sale of the church as more likely to come into question - then the church could, for example, become a cultural or concert building. According to Dumont, however, the city is not interested in making a purchase. Incidentally, the adjacent daycare centre St. Albert and the Thomas-Becket-Haus will always remain untouched.
What future does the parish have then?
We are not dissolving the parish, we are only shifting the focus,"explains Dumont. "With the Michaelskapelle we have a beautiful alternative, which we can manage more easily." At the same time, however, it is also an alternative that the believer did not enjoy from the very beginning. It was already painful at the beginning that St. Albert was abandoned,"says Claudia Helbing, chairman of the parish council in Andernach. "But it is important to realize that you only separate from the building and not from the parish as such." Even if it hurts her that bigger celebrations in St. Albert will not take place in the future - she can also win positive things from the smaller Michaelskapelle. "During the service we were sometimes only 40 people in the big church - there's certainly a nicer atmosphere in the chapel."
When's the closing time?
As long as the Michaelskapelle is still being renovated - in 2018 the interior renovation is still planned there, St. Albert will remain untouched for the time being. We have no pressure, nothing has to happen at a certain point in time,"explains the priest.
What does the closure of St. Albert mean for the other churches in Andernach?
In any case, the diocese is planning a clear combination of administrations and churches with its concept of "parishes of the future" from 2020 onwards. According to Dumont, it is therefore quite possible that St. Albert will not remain the last church to be closed in Andernach. "I think we'll only have one church in Andernach by the year 2030, he says."
