This building is closed on weekends. Access to the lobby available Mon-Fri 8am-5pm. This is a federal building and guns, knives, etc. are prohibited. Camera is allowed in the lobby where the mural is, but can not be taken further into the building.

Each mural panel represents a different period in San Antonio’s rich history from the arrival of the conquistadors and Franciscan missionaries to the great cattle drives and cotton businesses of the early 1900’s.

In the lobby of the Federal Building/Post Office above the marble walls, centered in every space between pairs of windows, is a series of murals painted by Howard Norton Cook entitled “San Antonio’s Importance in Texas History.”

This 16-panel set of murals, painted in the fresco style between 1937 and 1939, runs for 750 square feet. The panels range in size from 6 feet by 73 feet on the north and south walls to 6 feet by 20 feet on the east and west walls.
