In the East Thompson village of Thompson is the Airline Trail State Park, which is a long, narrow protected space along an old railroad right of way.

The trail is protected by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) as a state park trail. This trail runs in three segments. There is the southern segment that is about 22 miles long, the northern section, which is 21 miles, and this addition in Thompson 6.6 miles long, making about 50 miles, total.

This section has several access points. Access points include at Conn. Route 12/Cross Street, off Sunset Hill Road, and off Sand Dam Road. The one here is the easternmost access. There is a small parking lot just off the road that has spaces for about five cars. At this location is a sign for the Airline Trail State Trail and a kiosk that has information about the site, including an account of a train wreck that involved four trains.

From here you can walk west or east. Each entrance has a yellow gate across it. Both ways are through woods on a relatively flat and compacted dirt surface. There is no fee, and no other facilities along the way. Hiking, biking, horse-back skiing and cross-country skiing is allowed. Going west continues through Thompson, while going east continues to Massachusetts into the Douglas State Forest, where the rail trail continues.
