From 1867-1960, Buford was an important stop on the Union Pacific Railroad, where giant steam locomotives like the 4-8-8-4 Big Boys and the 4-6-6-4 Challengers stopped for water after summitting Sherman Hill.

After the last steam engines were retired, there was no more need for the UP to stop at Buford, and the settlement declined. But when the WPA writers traveled along the Oregon Trail for their Guide, Buford was still an active stop and the water in the tank here was critical to the steam operations along the railroad.

They wrote:

"[page 84] BUFORD, 68.8 m. (7,862 alt.), is a loading point for Sherman granite, used for railroad construction and other purposes."
