Tree Rock has been a curiosity in Buford WY since the Union Pacific Railroad built its main track here in 1867.

In the age of the automobile, Tree Rock continued to be a curiosity and favorite picnic stop along the Lincoln Highway.

The WPA writers also enjoyed Tree Rock, writing:

"[page 84] At 71.9 m. (R) is an old PINE TREE growing out of a large granite rock. It was kept alive in early days by firemen of the Union Pacific R.R., who drenched the tree daily with a bucket of water."
