WPA Culvert - Luther, OK - WPA Projects on Waymarking.com

Traveling a five or six mile area north of Luther, we were searching for the many drainage culverts constructed in this area by the WPA in the late 1930's. Oklahoma was severely affected by the economy of the 1930's, as well as a severe drought which last a decade. Families were hurting, and fortunately the federal New Deal programs brought much-needed work to the men of Oklahoma, and much improvement to the rural roadways. This is an example of one of the concrete culverts under many roads, allowing creek and low-spot drainage to flow harmlessly under the roadway.

This is a small culvert on Luther Road just south of Coffee Creek Road. From your vehicle, all you can spot is a short curbing on each side of the road. The culvert is a boxed, reinforced concrete tunnel approximately three feet high. The WPA shield stamp was completely hidden by dirt and we had to scrape the dirt off to expose it. Culverts in this area were built in 1937 and 1938.
