When tourists come across bones in the sand on the beach of Sa Coma - as happened several times over the past decades - chances are they are the remains of soldiers from the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). It is not a worthy grave for the estimated 500 killed and executed, there on the east coast of Majorca, in the soil under towels and parasol tips in the summer. There is not even a memorial stone at the place where on August 16, 1936, republican fighters landed under the command of Captain Bayo to wrest the island from the putschists under General Franco.
