Écrivain et patriote cubain, José Martí (1853-1895) fut le chef de file de la lutte pour l'indépendance de Cuba. Banni deux fois de l’Île pour son activisme politique, il vécut notamment en Espagne, au Mexique et au Guatemala.
Établi aux États-Unis de 1881 à 1895, Martí y fonda le Parti révolutionnaire cubain. Rentré à Cuba, il fut tué au cours de la deuxième guerre d'Indépendance, à la bataille de Dos Ríos.
Avec l'aide des États-Unis, Cuba obtint finalement son indépendance en 1898 mais demeura dans les faits sous contrôle états-unien jusqu'en 1934.

Cuban writer and patriot José Martí (1853-1895) was the leader of Cuba's struggle for independence. Banished twice from the Island for his political activism, he lived in Spain, Mexico and Guatemala.
Established in the United States from 1881 to 1895, Martí founded the Cuban Revolutionary Party. Returning to Cuba, he was killed during the Second Revolutionary War, at the Battle of Dos Ríos.
With the help of the United States, Cuba finally achieved independence in 1898, but remained under US control until 1934.
