The former abbey of Notre-Dame-de-la-Bénédiction-de-Dieu, between Brionnais and Forez, was a Cistercian settlement in Benedictine land.
Daughter of Clairvaux, it was founded in 1138 by Alberic, disciple of St. Bernard. The abbey, devastated and transformed several times and converted into a monastery of women in the 17th century, retains nothing of the conventual buildings.
From the abbey church there remains the nave and two arches of the ruins of the old transept. Dedicated to Notre-Dame and St. Bernard, it was begun around 1170-1180 and completed at the beginning of the 13th century.
The large nave of seven spans is a good example of Cistercian architecture at the transition from the Romanesque to the Gothic. It is vaulted by warheads on broken doubles, innovation of the time.
The elevation is three stories high, with a small blind arch between the large arcades and the high windows. The square pillars are flanked by brackets that receive pilasters. The aisles, already vaulted with ogives to the south, are still vaulted with ridges to the north.
A 17th century fence wall, built to separate the nave from the old choir, is currently the flat chevet of the parish choir set up in the last bay.
The church preserves a Romanesque altar decorated with arches on columns and a very beautiful rosette with original stained glass in the west facade.
The portal, a work of the late Romanesque style of Brionnais and very close to the portals of Semur, has a tympanum with vegetal decoration and a lintel bearing a cross. The high bell tower and polychrome roofs of the church at the end of the 15th century are the work of Abbé Pierre de la Fin.
The chapel of the Virgin was added in the 17th century by the family of Nerestang. The church preserves many works of art: reliquaries, slabs, a sarcophagus, keystones, statues and frescoes.
A treasure has been built in the bell tower, which also allows a beautiful panoramic view.

L’ancienne abbaye de Notre-Dame-de-la-Bénédiction-de-Dieu, entre Brionnais et Forez, était une implantation cistercienne en terre bénédictine.
Fille de Clairvaux, elle fut fondée en 1138 par Albéric, disciple de saint Bernard. L’abbaye, dévastée et transformée à plusieurs reprises et convertie en monastère de femmes au 17e siècle, ne conserve rien des bâtiments conventuels.
De l’église abbatiale il reste la nef et deux arcs des ruines de l’ancien transept. Dédiée à Notre-Dame et à Saint-Bernard, elle fut commencée vers 1170-1180 et achevée au début du 13e siècle.
La grande nef de sept travées est une bonne exemple de l’architecture cistercienne à la transition du roman au gothique. Elle est voûtée par des ogives sur doubleaux brisés, innovation de l’époque.
L’élévation est à trois étages, avec une petite arcade aveugle entre les grandes arcades et les fenêtres hautes. Les piliers carrés sont flanqués de consoles qui reçoivent des pilastres. Les bas-côtés, déjà voûtés d’ogives au sud, sont encore voûtés d’arêtes au nord.
Un mur de clôture du 17e siècle, construit pour séparer la nef de l’ancien chœur, est actuellement le chevet plat du chœur paroissial aménagé dans la dernière travée.
L’église conserve un autel roman décoré d’arcatures sur colonnettes et une très belle rosace avec vitrail d’origine dans la façade ouest.
Le portail, œuvre du style roman tardif du Brionnais et très proche des portails de Semur, possède un tympan au décor végétal et un linteau portant une croix. Le haut clocher et les toitures polychromes de l’église, de la fin du 15e siècle, sont l’œuvre de l’abbé Pierre de la Fin.
La chapelle de la Vierge fut ajoutée au 17e siècle par la famille de Nérestang. L’église conserve de nombreux objets d’art : des reliquaires, des dalles, un sarcophage, des clefs de voûte déposées, des statues et des fresques.
Un trésor a été aménagé dans le clocher, qui permet également une belle vue panoramique.
