The ironmaster's home was at Rock. Here also were the first forge, 1794, and a nail and slitting mill. A founder of Bellefonte; leader in Centre County affairs until his death in 1832.
Philip Benner, born in Chester County, served in the revolutionary war and engaged in the iron business. In 1792 he bought land in the Bellefonte area and erected a forge, grist mill and nail mill. He sent his products, packed on horse back, to Pittsburgh, where he sold his products without competition for many years.
