The WPA writers, on their visit to San Augustine, made special note of the home of Matthew Cartwright, an important early landowner and trader in San Augustine.

From the Guide to Texas:

"Three blocks east of the courthouse square is the CARTWRIGHT HOUSE (open by arrangement), a dignified two-story frame structure, also built in 1839, when it stood directly across the street from the University of San Augustine, a pioneer institution of learning incorporated June 5, 1837, and active until the outbreak of the Civil War."

The 1936 Texas State Centennial historic marker reads as follows:

"HOME OF MATTHEW CARTWRIGHT

Built in 1839 by Isaac Campbell.

Purchased by Matthew Cartwright in 1847.

Still in possession of his descendants.

Erected by the State of Texas
1936"
